“And he said to them, ‘Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.’” Luke 12:15
Happiness. We all want to feel. We purchase a thing, feel briefly happy and then go about looking for the next thing to buy that we hope will make us happy. It’s a never ending cycle. We want, want, want.
When we continually search for happiness through possessions, wealth or fame, we distance ourselves from God. For those of us in recovery from alcoholism or addiction, wanting can cause a relapse if we are not careful! If we are to be fully reliant on God, we must trust that he will guide our lives so that we live deeply, fully and satisfied. We won’t need to buy things in order to feel happy. We will be deeply content within ourselves, because we are walking with God. The apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians “my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” We don’t need to find happiness in earthly riches, we are given riches in Christ.
Wise Solomon, on reflecting back on his life wrote, “He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 5:10) Possessions, the love of money, neither gives us true serenity, for we are in a perpetual state of perceived lack, wanting more, no matter how much we have! Some of the poorest people I know are millionaires and billionaires. They are poor in spirit and poor in heart.
When we give our lives over to God, we stop the merry-go-round of wanting this, then that. We are satisfied with the things we have and the work we do for God. We appreciate the beauty in the world around us. We are grateful for the gifts we are given. We are truly alive! We have the abundance of life that Jesus promised us. (John 10:10) Now, that I will be happy with!
F.R.O.G. Practice: Give your life to God. Ask for forgiveness of your sins. Listen to what God tells you to do. Be obedient to His word. You will find you are happy beyond measure walking with God!
