“For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24)

Bill Wilson, the man who set Alcoholics Anonymous into motion, had a hard time thinking of God as an old man with a beard, sitting on a cloud “up there”.  Bill appreciated the natural rhythm of nature. He was amazed at the laws at work in the universe. Bill couldn’t wrap his head around a human-like God, but he could envision a God of spirit.

As we move through the first and second recovery Steps, we must be ready to come to a decision as to what we think God is. After all, if we are going to surrender our will and our lives over to God, shouldn’t we know to whom or to what, we surrender to? If we are serious about our recovery, we must be serious about our search for God. We are warned in the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous, that we are beyond human aid. We must have a spiritual experience and allow God to guide and direct our thoughts, feelings, and actions if we are to remain clean and sober.

What does God mean to you? Spend time today writing down your ideas. Be as truthful as you can about what you believe. Write as many details as you can. Pray before and during your writing. Ask God’s Holy Spirit to guide your words. Feel free to share your thoughts here with the God Powered Recovery community. Click on the title of this post to leave a comment. Be blessed!
