Isaiah 50:7 But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.
Shame is one of the most neurotoxic emotions. It floods the brain and body with chemicals that kill off or damage healthy cells, causing disease and other afflictions in the body and mind. Shame shackles us to our past and makes us feel that we are undeserving of goodness and love. It can motivate us to behave in destructive ways.
Did you know that the word ashamed is mentioned 122 times and shame is mentioned 100 times in the (King James Version) Bible? Clearly God knew that many of us were going to struggle with shame. He knows that shame steals our ability to feel the joy and abundance He wants us to know. God wants us to get past our shame.
I personally know the thief called shame. I lived for years in shame’s clutches and tried many ways to unlock myself from its prison. I changed my diet and exercised. I spent a lot of time and money seeing counselors and doctors. I even tried plastic surgery to change parts of my body I felt ashamed of! But nothing, I mean absolutely nothing relieved me of shame’s bondage until I took every dark thought and feeling in my heart and soul and laid them at God’s feet.
It was only through prayer, honest conversations with God, that I began to feel shame falling away from my heart and soul, bit by bit. It didn’t happen overnight, but rather is was a slow progression of healthy thoughts and emotions returning. I was restored as I allowed God’s love into my life.
