“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)
I carry two dates in the precious treasure trove of my heart: October 13, 2010 and June 23, 2011. Those are my sobriety dates from alcohol and benzos. Stopping the booze was a piece of cake. Getting free from the benzo (clonazepam) I took as prescribed by my doctor… not so easy, to say the least. I fought for my life, literally. So many moments of the day and night I begged God for His help. The brain damage from the medication took years to heal.
In the “big book” Of Alcoholics Anonymous it states that we are “beyond human aid.” Getting free from our addictions requires the help of God. It requires our full reliance on God. “God meant for us to all be free and whole.” I love that lyric from the song Let Freedom Ring, by the Gaither Vocal Band. God doesn’t want us to be lost in our addictions. He wants us to be clear minded. Fully conscious. He wants us to be able to appreciate the gifts He so freely gives to us. He wants us to be fully alive!
Jesus bought our freedom for us when He hung on the cross. We can turn to Him for help getting free from whatever substances or behaviors has us imprisoned in chains. I am grateful every minute of every day for my freedom. I am grateful for God’s grace that keeps me sober. You can be free, and you can sing, let freedom ring!
I hope you enjoy the video. I watch it every morning as I write Soul Reminders. If you need help being fully reliant on God, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to help.
