“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

You’ve got a few years, or maybe even a few months, of sobriety under your belt. You think, “I’ve got this. I can do this on my own.” You stop spending time in daily conscious contact with God. Your ego steps in and starts running the show. Sure, you still love God, and you think about God from time to time, but you are no longer surrendered to God. That’s dangerous ground for any alcoholic or addict to stand on.

We alcoholics and addicts are beyond human aid. We need a spiritual solution to our problem. When we stop our drug of choice, we absolutely have to have something that can relieve us of the bondage of self that makes us turn to our addiction for comfort. We find relief in God. God’s Holy Spirit comforts us and guides us. With it, we can weather the slings and arrows of life without alcohol or drugs. When we stop connecting with God and we rely on ourselves, we will ultimately fail. We must attend to our relationship with God every day. We must give our lives over to Him every day. Our relationship with God has to be the most important thing in our lives if we are to stay clean and sober and live fulfilling lives.
