“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” (1 Pet. 3:15)

What do you tell people when they ask how you manage to be happy, joyous and free? Do you take the credit, or do you share with them that God has changed you? Are you embarrassed to mention God? So many are in today’s fast-paced modern scientific world. When we don’t acknowledge God’s work in our lives, we miss the opportunity to share God with others.

We may want to keep secret that we are in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, or dependence on psych meds, but let us not want to keep our love of God a secret! We can’t love God and deny God at the same time. Jesus warned us, “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:33) Yes, it can be tricky to talk about God these days. We may get laughed at for clinging to beliefs that science wants to tell us are ridicules, i.e. there is no God. But at the same time, we are entering a new chapter in our culture where people are getting burned out with so much technology that connects us with knowledge but disconnects us from real relationships with each other. There is a growing hunger and thirst for something more substantial in our hearts and souls.

We can share God with gentleness and reverence. We don’t have to make anyone feel uncomfortable by judging their beliefs and insisting they drop them and take on ours…or else!  We simply share God with them. We tell them how God has changed us. Jesus said, “Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father who is in Heaven.” (Matthew 10:32.) We are supposed to share God with others: “Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples.” (Psalm 96:3) Much like the twelfth step in A.A., once we have had a spiritual connection with God, we are to carry His message to others and to practice His rules in all of our affairs.

F.R.O.G. Practice: Share God with others today, gently and with reverence. No need to “sell.” Simply give an account of why you have such hope and joy inside of you!
