“Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.” Psalm 183:8

A CEO of a billion dollar company shared that he had a trick he followed in order to make his company successful. He confessed he read his company’s mission statement every morning. He also read the business plan. He said that getting clear on his objectives every morning allowed him to focus on the things that were important to running his business. Focus and intention is vital if we want to accomplish anything.

Father Michael, the priest who was killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11, also started his day in a similar fashion. He didn’t have a mission statement or a business plan per se, but he did have a life plan: to be of service to God. Father Michael started his day with this simple prayer: “Father, take me where you want me to go. Introduce me to who you want me to meet. Tell me what you want me to say and please help me get out of your way. Amen.”

How often do we jump out of bed and start our day with no thought to God? If we want to accomplish a life living in His grace, we must put Him first. First thing in the morning, we must focus on Him. We must ask Him to direct us from the moment we wake up. Not after coffee, or after we shower or answer our emails; no, from the moment we open our eyes to a new day.

Today you might want to consider praying Father Michael’s prayer to start your day. You may want to practice asking God to guide you every day. What we focus on manifests. I can’t think of a better life plan than to focus on and follow what God wants for us and from us.
