But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” Matthew 19:14.

I gave birth to four children in less than four years: two singletons and a set of twins. I understood that my children didn’t belong to me, but rather they were on loan to me from God. I had a huge responsibility to take good care of God’s precious belongings. I loved them, listened to them, and we played. Oh, how we played! (Did you know that play grows our brains in a good way? We adults need to play more!)

As I taught my children as they grew up, so too, did they teach me. They taught me to be in the present moment, fully open to life. They showed me what it was to be curious and full of wonder about God’s creation. They showed me how to be vulnerable and trust. They showed me a state of grace and humility I needed.

My children’s complete trust in me reminded me that my adult ability to think and to take care of myself keeps me from being fully reliant on God. I want to run the show.  But that’s not the way God wants me to live. He wants me to be as trusting and dependant on him as my children were upon me when they were little. He wants me to be as curious and full of wonder as they were. And, He wants me to play. He also wants me to stay in the moment, for that is where He resides. (We can’t access God reliving the past or worrying about the future.)

God doesn’t want us to act immature, (“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.” 1 Corinthians 11:13) but He does want us to be childlike in our simplicity of trust and reliance on Him. When I have hard times, I picture God sitting in a rocker, holding me on his chest, singing me a lullaby, for He IS my Father, and I am indeed, His child. You are too.

In what ways can you let go of your adult ways so that you are more childlike and more able to be fully reliant on God? The kingdom of heaven will belong to you then!
