Psalm 103: (NIV) Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things…

It’s easy to have faith when life is humming along neat and tidy. But what happens to your faith when the darkness comes? What happens when you are deep in the pit, or out in the desert? Does your faith waver when life gets hard? Sure, you call out to God in times of adversity, begging for help, but do you really trust him to help you?

For many of us, adversity tests our faith and pushes us to rely on our own understanding and ego. We are impatient, unable to go the distance in our hard times. We want our problems solved right now. We snatch our lives out of God’s hands. But we do this at our own peril. When we take our lives out of God’s care and allow our egos and our own understanding run our lives, we are no longer able to receive His gifts. Not only will we be in the darkness, cut off from God, but our own plans and schemes to overcome our hardships will usually fail in the long run because they are born out of fear, impatience or anger.

We can’t know the mind of God. God doesn’t expect us to understand his plans for us. God does, however, expect us to rely on him totally, at all times. We are to trust in his solution to our problems, and trust his timing. One of the prayers we can pray when we find ourselves not trusting God in our hard times is a simple verse found in Mark 9:24 (Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed) “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

God WILL redeem you from the pit. He will crown you with love and compassion, and he will satisfy your desire with good things. All we need to do to receive such amazing gifts is to trust and obey. Even in the hard times. Especially in the hard times.
